As the semester reaches an end and the fall weather turns to a brisk winter, we often find ourselves stuck inside with nothing to do but catch the winter blues. To keep yourself in a better spirit this winter without having to break the bank or travel out of state, consider a few of your old Kentucky home’s great options.

Gerry Seavo founder of the Non-profit organization, Explore Kentucky, and an avid outdoorsman, took the time to recommend some of his favorite winter activities.

Many of them revolve around the Kentucky State Park system. As most of outdoors people take a hiatus during the winter, places like Red River Gorge becomes a quiet getaway. You can stay at a B&B or rent a cabin for up to fourteen people, making it the perfect spot for a couple or group of friends alike. Hiking is still very popular during the colder seasons and the scenic hilltop views are always worth the climb.

Seavo also strongly recommends caving. They may be a little bit pricier but the caves remain a constant temperature year round. You can make a small trip for the tours at Mammoth Cave, or remain closer to home and in the comfort of your own car for Mega Caverns “Lights Under Louisville”.

For a further trip, in Prestonburg, KY you can take Elk tours in Jenny Wiley State Resort Park. Not only do they offer the independent tours, but a tour package that includes lodging, dinner, and the elk tour for the great price of $160 per couple. There are also similar tours for Eagle watching in the Western Kentucky area.

Lastly, Seavo recommends a larger event in Olive Hill, Kentucky, called Winter Adventure Weekend. It runs in late January and offers a diverse range of activities. Just a few include wild caving, rappelling, tree climbing, kayaking, and horseback riding. Lodging and dining is also included in the area.

For closer to home trips you might also consider outdoor ice skating or sledding at the local parks. With any budget there are a range of choices in your very own state.
