Men’s golf wins Cardinal Intercollegiate

 

Simpsonville Kentucky at the Cardinal Club would be the site for the 2013 Cardinal Intercollegiate, a tournament which the Cards won last year. Competing with the host Cardinals would be Mercer, Austin Peavy, Furman, Cincinnati, Eastern Kentucky, Western Kentucky among others.

After the first two rounds the Cardinals sat in first place topping second and third place Austin Peavy and

Mercer. Thanks to junior Antonie Le Saux, sophomore Max Walz and freshman Robert Geidel, the Cards had a seven shot lead after day one.

Le Saux, who finished third, and Geidel, would continue their impressive performance as they would help lead the Cardinals to their second straight, and fourth overall Cardinal Intercollegiate tournament victory. Despite losing 10 strokes from day one to day two the Cardinals would hold on to their first tournament win of the fall.

 

Women’s golf in Mercedes Benz Collegiate

 

After winning the Cardinal Cup in mid September, the Lady Cardinals’s golf team set their eyes on their next tournament. After the first day in the Mercedes Benz Collegiate in Knoxville, the Lady Cards placed in an impressive third place. Junior Katie Petrino led the way by placing third after day one.

After a rain delay suspended round two, the tournament was shortened to 36 holes. The Lady Cardinals were in thrid place heading into the final round of the the Mercedes Benz Collegiate but dropped after the day was completed. They shot a 302 in the final round and finished sixth with a score of 585. Arkansas would go on the win the tournament and sophomore Laura Restrepo would finish eighth in the individual honors, her third straight top ten finish.

 

Men’s soccer defeats Temple 3-0

The  number 18 Louisville Cardinals stepped onto the pitch against the Temple Owls this past weekend with a three game streak and a home crowd behind them. Freshman Andrew Brody had his fifth assist and first goal of the season in the 3-0 dismantling of the Owls. Also scoring with Brody was senior midfielder Ade Akinsanya, and sophomore forward Richardo Velzaco.

Along with the three goals scored, goalkeeper Joachim Ball racked up his fourth shut out of in the season in a game in which head coach Ken Lolla said was their most complete of the season. The Cardinals are now 6-2 and 2-0 in conference play while the Owls drop to 6-3 and 0-1 in conference.

On the slate this week for the Cards is a road trip to Columbus to face off against Ohio State.

 

Women’s soccer opens AAC play

 

Friday night marked the first and last American Athletic Conference season opener for the Lady Cardinals. After a double overtime lost to Marquette that stopped their three game winning streak the women’s soccer team faced off against Memphis in a game that would end in similar fashion.

Junior midfielder Erin Yenney, and junior forward Casey Whitfield, scored goals in the 31st and 70th minutes. With no separation between the teams after 90 minutes overtime was needed to decide a winner. Whitfield swiftly sent a cross to senior forward Christine Exeter on ther first offensive possession of overtime in the 92nd minute, that would prove to be the final difference.

The Lady Cards improve to 5-3-1 on the year and will host the Rutgers on Sunday night then it’s off to Dallas, Texas to play SMU.

 

Men’s Basketball scrimmage October 5

The University of Louisville’s first men’s basketball scrimmage is on Oct. 5 in the KFC Yum Center and will tip off at 4 p.m. UofL will stage three Red-White intrasquad scrimmages in the KFC Yum Center on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 12 at 3:30 p.m.; and Saturday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m.

Tickets, priced at $10 for lower side and corner arena seats, and $5 for end zone and upper arena seats, are on sale at the UofL Ticket Office, located near gate two of Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium at 2800 South Floyd Street. The ticket office is open weekdays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The defending national champs have some big shoes to fill as they must replace former senior, Peyton Siva and first round NBA draft pick Gorgui Dieng. A transfer and junior, Chris Jones expects to step into the vacant point guard role while Dieng’s position might be replaced by comity.

“The offseason has been pretty good, we have been working together as a team, conditioning and lifting weights, just trying to build that team chemistry that we had last year. I’m excited for opening scrimmage on the fifth and I’m ready to get after it,” sophomore power forward Montrezl Harrel said.
