“We know that this will create hardship for some of our students. We wish we didn’t have to increase it,” said President James R Ramsey during a budget forum on the Belknap campus that attracted only a handful of students according to a report in the Courier-Journal today.

Ramsey said yesterday that he expects to propose a 5 percent increase which would increase tuition to $3,972 per semester for in-state undergraduates and out-of-state students would pay $459 more per semester as stated in the article.

As previously reported in The Louisville Cardinal, the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education established a 5 percent cap on tuition for in-state undergraduates who attend both U of L and the University of Kentucky.

Nancy Rodriguez reported that as a result, U of L’s proposed budget for the coming year will include no salary increases for faculty and staff, who received roughly a 1 percent increase this year. Ramsey lamented the decision, saying that it “absolutely” affects employee morale and could be a factor in faculty being lured away by other institutions.

“This is a huge concern for us and something we don’t like about the budget and wish we could change,” Ramsey said.
