The University of Louisville Association of Black Students is having their week from Feb. 23 to 27. The week will include food, discussions and movies throughout U of L’s campus and free appetizers Friday night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Carly Rae’s located in Old Louisville.
ABS became neighbors with Office for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Services at the beginning of last semester.
Their office spaces within the Red Barn are collectively called The Intersection.
“I love the partnership,” said Darryl Young, ABS Vice President for RSO Partnerships. “I think it’s a really great thing. I’m glad ABS is such a forward progressive thinking organization. We’re not mired in bigotry and intolerance.”
Young said ABS provides support to “The Umbrella,” which includes 15 organizations such as fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi and group Conquerors Through Christ.
“ABS is the proud governor of the African American Programming Fund nearly $20,000 that helps student organizations host on campus events,” stated their Web site.
“I handle all affairs pertaining to our affiliated RSOs, allocating the aid [from] AAPF…make sure it gets allocated to our RSOs,” said Young.
Young and ABS Events Coordinator Jaison Gardner said the doors to ABS are open to all people.
“We have a wide variety of events to choose from,” said Gardner, regarding next week’s activities.
“We’re partnering with the law school association. We have an all things black trivia portion that we’re doing with black faculty and staff,” he said. “We have several different movies that are important to black folks.”
Prior to their events listed, ABS held a free breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Baptist Campus Ministry Mon., Feb. 23rd.
