As the two o’clock hour rolled around, a glare from a silver Oldsmobile’s window pierced two different sets of glass windows and traveled into the Student Government Association’s office on the third floor of the Student Activities Center.
There were only three members of student government in the office at the time.
Kirk Laughlin, Executive Student Advocate, settled down at a table in the middle of the office for lunch after addressing letters to Governor Beshear.
Laughlin is in the process of mailing about 160 letters to the governor.
“The intent of this effort is to both remind the Governor of the role students play in building a stronger Kentucky into the 21st Century,” Laughlin says, “and the concerns those students have, as well as an effort to get students involved in civics.”
As the aroma of Laughlin’s Subway sandwich lingers in the air, Trevor Joelson, Executive Director of Athletics, is sitting on a small couch adjacent to Laughlin.  Joelson is playing the song, “Never Going to Give You Up” by Rick Astley on his Macbook while checking his Facebook account.
Levi Shanks, Director of Spirits and Traditions, is working on a U of L spirit book, but is having trouble getting in touch with other schools as well as figuring out how he will fund his project.
“Basically this book contains everything about a school, from school history, to fight songs to RSOs to get involved with,” Shanks says. “At the end of the book, there is a section on school “traditions”, but it is more of a college bucket list of things to do before you graduate.”
According to Joelson, Rudy Spencer, SGA President, had left the office early that day because he had not been feeling well. This didn’t last for long though as Spencer re-emerges around 3 o’clock, ready for the weekly meeting of the SGA executive board.
More members of the SGA start popping into office at this time.
According to Spencer, this meeting is designed for each of the top four to update everyone about what is going on that week.
Dani Smith, Services Vice President, sits in her office, covered from wall to wall with large pieces of paper outlining the concerns that students have with the new mandatory meal plan requirement.
With all the large pieces of paper up, no part of the actual walls can be seen. Smith is typing up the official student proposal for the meal plan waiver, which outlines who will be exempt from the plan and under what circumstances.
With minutes left before the four o’clock meeting, Executive Vice President, Mike Dennis, reviews reports from senators.
“These reports cover anything the senator did over the course of the semester,” Dennis said, ready for the meeting that, once started, will quiet the SGA office again.
