The melting pot is out, but Jesus is in. With John McCain’s running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin, being held as the figure of real life Americans, I see how many people could be overlooked in our nation.
Palin’s Christian and family values are the root of her generalized characterization of “every American.”
Some might see American values as synonymous with Christian values because they identify with both categories. Those are the people whose personal agendas will be satisfied through the GOP.
As for everyone else, we should be worried about her zealous values impairing her ability to make objective decisions for all Americans.
Being void of all religious beliefs, my values are more fundamentally American than hers. I agree with a woman’s right to choose, which was established in the case Roe v. Wade.
I believe in guarding the idea of separation of church and state, which Thomas Jefferson wrote about in relation to the first amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America.
In fact, the same amendment that says my government is no theocracy is the one that gives her the right to believe openly in her faith.
Of course McCain and Barack Obama have their own religious and personal values like any of us, but they are running on politics.
I‘d hope those values would never intervene on the rights given to us before either takes the presidency. Palin is just going for the popularity contest of this lip smacking Christian right.
