The Student Government Association chose not to endorse the student walkout and rally being held tomorrow at their last senate meeting.

This didn’t come as a surprise to the organizer, Jennifer Wallin of the Peace Action Coalition, the student group organizing the walkout.

“SGA hasn’t been involved in the planning process of the walkout, so they were a little reluctant to put their seal of approval on it,” she said.

Some opposition to the walkout came from medical school senators, who said they could not walkout because it would “adversely affect” services to their patients.

There were other senators who felt the walkout itself is a misguided effort.

Fourth year medical school student Gabe Jacobs said efforts should be focused more at the state government and less toward U of L. Teaching Assistant and Senator Amber Carrier said she does not feel this is a legitimate excuse to miss class, and will not excuse her students in order for them to participate.

“There were also some senators in the graduate school who feel the university is doing all they can to keep this budget situation from worsening.”

Even without SGA support, the walkout will go on.

Wallin said the best result the walkout can have is to create a greater sense of student solidarity on campus.
