Recently, I read the article by Darren McVey in The Louisville Cardinal. I am saddened and disappointed to read such regressive opinions in a university funded, student run organization.
There are many statements, written by McVey, which can easily be thwarted with the slightest amount of intellect.
Concentrating on two, I would like to mention the blatant use of fallacies, and the absolute misrepresentation of feminist beliefs. The point in bringing teens and President Clinton into the issue is to confuse the dialogue. This trick, and it is a trick, is commonly called a straw man fallacy.
The ignorance McVey has for the many levels of societal pressure teens face daily is abundantly clear in the article. Ultimately, both of these topics do not belong in a debate about the morality of homosexuality.
In regard to McVey’s beliefs about feminists; they do not seek to make sexual intercourse a casual experience and it is naive of anyone who thinks this is the case.
Upon reading the article, I felt the author seems to be actively wallowing in his own lack of education.
Are we, as a university, supposed to sit back and let people of this level of ignorance represent our opinions?
I should hope not; but, somehow, we have allowed a person a forum to spew ignorance and hate.
