Jon Cecil is a senior marketing major at the University of Louisville and the President of the student spirit group the ‘L-Raisers’. The Louisville Cardinal jumped at the opportunity to sit down with Cecil and discuss the current state of spirit at the University of Louisville, as well as the organization he oversees. Cecil is a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and is also a Cardinal Bird.
Q: How were the L-Raisers founded?
A: It was the Red Sea originally. Back around 200 when John L. was here they started the “L-Yes” campaign. That’s when they changed the name to the L-Raisers.
Q: What made you want to become the L-Raisers President?
A: I was born a Louisville fan. My parents and my sister went to U of L. I was born in red. Coming to the university I wanted to do something to get involved and leave my mark. Also, a lot of these sports hardly get any recognition, and to go out with a big group and support them, I know that means a lot to them.
Q: Why do you think some people have bad feelings towards the L-Raisers?
A: A lot of people bash the L-Raisers because all they see us at is the games they go to, not all the other games. If they would just come to any games outside of basketball and football they would see us.
Q: What is the biggest problem you see with some of the L-Raisers?
A: A lot of them don’t get into it. We have a group who are really avid, but then for some it’s a social event to go hang out with friends.
Q: How has non-major sports been this year?
A: It has improved a lot. We have had big turnouts at some soccer, volleyball, and field hockey games. We are really looking forward to baseball and lacrosse.
Q: Why should students want to join the L-Raisers?
A: It’s a great way to meet people. If you are a U of L fan it’s a good way to meet people with the same passion.
Q: Why does U of L need the L-Raisers?
A: Without a unified student section we don’t have a unified voice at athletic events. We are trying to get everyone involved. If that happens…I mean that is the ultimate goal.
