After its last annual trip ended in controversy, the International Service Learning Program was re-instated Friday. In March, the University of Louisville program was under fire when four black female students were allegedly left behind in Belize.According to U of L Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Tom Jackson, the suspension was not a direct result of the incident, but many issues factored into the renovation of the organization. “We wanted to reduce ISLP in its size, and return the program to its roots,” Jackson said. The remodeled program is more disciplinary, and Jackson described it as a “tighter” program.”ISLP not only helps individuals in Belize, but also the students who take part in this meaningful experience,” said Jackson. He continued to say that the program is the best collaborative effort at U of L, combining elements of service learning and academia.U of L’s program has made the trip to Belize yearly since 2001 during spring break.
