Autumn has officially begun, and the fall semester is in full swing at the University of Louisville. So what do freshmen have to say about college now that they have had half a semester to think about it?
“College is nothing like what other people said it would be. It’s a lot of hard work,” said Keni Patel, freshman biology major. “[College] gives you the harder perspective of life instead of having it all hand-fed to you.”
Amanda Fiedler, a freshman middle and secondary education major, agreed.
“The first weeks were pretty easy, but then things started picking up. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed.”
Emily Wortham, a freshman secondary education major, said this type of workshop can help freshmen deal with all of their newly found responsibility.
“The first few weeks were all about having fun, but now I’ve gotten used to classes, and I see it as something more of importance. It’s still fun, but there is a lot of responsibility, and you have to learn to deal with that.”
Fiedler agreed that handling responsibility is important and so is setting goals.
“I love college because I’m actually working towards a real goal, something that matters to me.”
While many students love U of L, they also realize that no college is perfect.
So what do freshmen at U of L dislike about college? For some, it is simply their class schedule. “U of L could get rid of 8 a.m. classes,” said Wortham smiling.
“I know very few people who are alert enough to take an 8 a.m. class, but as freshmen, we were kind of forced into them.”
For others, such as Patel, it is more of an issue of weather. “I don’t look forward to walking in the cold weather from one building to another.”
Despite these difficulties, freshmen seem to be enjoying their first college experiences. Wortham spends her free time participating in campus activities such as L-Raisers and Intervarsity.
She believes that participating in extracurricular activities is something that everyone should try.
“There is something for everyone on this campus,” she said.
With half of the semester over, freshmen may find themselves struggling to keep up with the demands of college, such as class work and work schedules, but they will also enjoy the time they spend with friends and having new experiences.
These are events that freshmen can look forward to even beyond their freshmen year.
“I look forward to meeting new people and becoming more involved on campus,” said Wortham.
