They could hear the roar of 70,857 mostly blue fans all the way in Louisville when senior wide out Steve Johnson caught a 57-yard touchdown pass with 28 seconds left in the game.

Senior quarterback Andre’ Woodson’s pass to Johnson gave the Wildcats their first Governor’s Cup in the last five years, with a score of 40-34. The win also marked the first time UK had beaten a top-10 opponent since 1977.

The score came after U of L senior quarterback Brian Brohm marched the Cardinals down the field 83 yards to take the lead on a touchdown by sophomore running back Anthony Allen. U of L’s score came with 1:45 left in the game, just enough time for UK to strike.

“We did give them quite a bit of time to go down and score,” Brohm said. “They made a play and did a great job. We gave them too many opportunities.”

The Wildcats were led by Woodson, a Heisman trophy candidate, who had yet to beat U of L in his career as a Wildcat. He put up 275 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. Woodson’s main target was Louisville native and UK senior wide receiver Keenan Burton who hauled in nine passes for 99 yards.

“He’s as good as any quarterback in the country. And I think he’s proved that tonight,” Kentucky Head Coach Rich Brooks said.

Woodson has now completed 257 passes without throwing an interception, a Southeastern Conference record. He is only 14 pass attempts without an interception shy of the NCAA mark set by Trent Dilfer.

Senior running back Rafael Little added a potent ground attack to Woodson’s aerial assault, carrying the ball 27 times for 151 yards.

Woodson and Brohm have had a rivalry that dates back to high school. Woodson got the best of Brohm for the first time in his career.

“It feels great, but this ain’t between me and him,” Woodson said. “It feels even more great to say we beat Louisville. They’re just 70 miles from us, and we hear it all the time, how we don’t even belong in the same stadium with them.”

Brohm threw for 366 yards and two touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Harry Douglas had a career high 13 catches for 223 yards. The preseason All-American has now had at least 100 yards receiving in each of his last six games.

Louisville head coach Steve Kragthorpe said the Cardinals had to “get back up on the horse”, his players echoed the same message.

“We’ve got a lot of big games left to play. Our goal from the beginning of the season was to play in a BCS bowl,” junior center Eric Wood told the media. “We win the Big East and that is still a possibility. That is what we have to work for.”

Louisville fans hope that the team will take lessons from the UK game into their conference schedule as they look to repeat as Big East champions beginning with Syracuse University this Saturday.

“Hopefully the game will be an eye opener and we will know how to better prepare for tougher teams in the future,” said sophomore sports administration major Stephanie Bonenberger.

The Cardinals dropped to No. 18 in the rankings while the Wildcats cracked the top-25 at No. 21.

While the future remains unclear for both the Cardinals and the Wildcats, who take on Arkansas on the road this Saturday, one thing is for certain: the
