Editor’s note: This is one of four Student Government Association student profiles. For the next three issues, The Cardinal will take a closer look at the incoming executive officers.
Originally from Northern Kentucky, Brian Hoffman comes to the University of Louisville from Scott High School. He began his career in politics in the eighth grade as class president and continued that position through his senior year.
During his first semester at U of L, Hoffman participated in Freshmen Lead, As a sophomore he became a senator for the School of Business.
Now as a junior political science and economics major, his term as executive vice president is about to end, and he is looking forward to the new year and his term as SGA president.
“He is the same ambitious overachiever that still surprises me with what he can do. In the midst of his trying to change the world, he still keeps his sense of humor and wit,” said long time friend and classmate, Stephanie Olds, a junior marketing and communication major.
Hoffman believes that through his experiences in service activities, which include volunteering at Kentucky Refugee Ministries and being vice president of the Rotaract, among others, he has found what he really desires to do with the rest of his life.
After studying abroad in Costa Rica for a month and being a two-time participant in the International Service Learning Program in Belize, Hoffman discovered that he wanted to do something that extended beyond the borders of the United States.
“I got to go to the United Nations and give a speech on the international service learning program in Belize and explain what we did down there,” Hoffman said. “How many people get to do that?”
Hoffman is also an active member in the Sigma Chi Fraternity and an Honors Scholar.
In his spare time, Hoffman is an avid photographer, a hobby he picked up from his father. He is also a huge Beatles fan as evidenced from the many posters he has hanging around his office.
“He devotes himself to the service of others,” said Brian Bennett, a junior political science major and member of Sigma Chi and Rotaract. “He is the type of person that will do whatever possible to improve himself, but more importantly those around him,”
“I see it as my responsibility as a scholarship recipient, to do something for U of L,” said Hoffman.
