Two candidates of the Golden Ticket slate were warned by the Supreme Court of the Student Government Association on Thursday for violating an election rule.
The Golden Ticket slate presidential candidate Brian Hoffman and executive vice president candidate Kate Brueggeman, both junior political science majors, were found in violation by the court after a violation report was filed by the EVP candidate of the Students First slate Matt Pulley. Pulley is a sophomore engineering major.
Pulley claimed that Hoffman and Brueggeman posted multiple campaign flyers on a bulletin board in Mitzi’s, an eatery located in the Miller Information Technology Center. According to SGA election rules, multiple postings are prohibited. In the report filed, Pulley requested for 10 percent of their votes to be deducted
“There was a violation, but these two candidates had no idea, it was an accident. The posters [Brueggemann] found out,” said Kyle Riggs, a junior political science major who represented Hoffman and Brueggeman during the hearing.
The court ruled that Hoffman and Brueggeman be issued a Class One Penalty entailing a formal warning and a public reprimand. The reprimand can be read in the Opinion section of The Cardinal.
“I think the ruling was fair, we did try our best to prevent anything like this from happening,” said Brueggeman.
“I agree with the result, and if I had known that a reprimand was an option, I would have asked for that instead of asking 10 percent of their votes being taken away,” said Pulley, a sophomore civil engineering major.
New election rules were ratified this semester in order to replace previous rules that were too vague. According to the new rules, if a candidate is found in violation by the court a second time, the candidate will be subjected to a loss of votes in an amount determined by the court.
SGA voting ends tomorrow at 5 p.m.
