As a University of Louisville student and employee of College Book Warehouse Terrance Greer walked and yelled through the book isles, “Anyone want free books!” customers paused briefly and finally five guys gathered to inquire about the giveaway. When presented with cream pies to eat and told whoever finished theirs first, would get their textbooks for free, only two competed.

When the winner finished, he and his contender’s faces look like someone went crazy with shaving cream. In addition to pies, they also had donut and hot dog eating contests. Food and books, who would of thunk it?

Featured on MTV’s show “True Life,” champion food eater Takeru Kobayashi holds the world record for eating the most hot dogs and buns, according to International Federation of Competitive Eating’s public relations director, Matthew Rizzetta. The record is 53.75 eaten in one setting. In order to win the hot dog eating contest at CBW, a student had to consume one hot dog and bun first among other contestants.

The winner was a girl who beat five guys, which included two University of Louisville football players. Communication senior and general merchandise manager of CBW, Pam Mullins said, “She [the winner] was very proud of herself.”

In the past CBW have had Mardi Gras and sports, such as basketball as themes to promote themselves during their book rushes, which starts at the beginning of fall and spring semester each year. Mullins, an employee for over two years said they wanted to try something different.

Rizzetta of I.F.O.C.E., who host worldwide eating contest four times a month said an Emergency Medical Technician is required at their grub challenging events. Luckily that was not needed at CBW, just quick and ambitious eaters who had a desire for free textbooks.
