Cancer center promotes bone marrow awareness month

University of Louisville students are encouraged to join the National Marrow Donor Program’s Registry, in light of the National Marrow Awareness Month, beginning tomorrow at the Student activities Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.. U of L is partnering with the James Graham Brown Cancer Center in the first student bone marrow drive. The registration is a simple process, involving a medical history form and a swab taken from the inside of the cheek. Students who register will receive a lunch coupon and a t-shirt, along with an eligibility for other prizes.More than 30,000 Americans are diagnosed with blood diseases and many of those individuals turn to the NMDP registry due to the lack of matching blood types within their family or race. Because of these implications it remains vital for the diversity of donors to increase, so more matches can be made. Those interested should contact Jennifer Brown at jennifer.brownlee@louisville.edu or at (502) 562-4515.
