Head coach Pam Bustin and the women’s field hockey team swept the competition in their two-game weekend trip to Syracuse. Friday’s game featured a match up with the hosting Orange as the Cards took down the home team 5-2. Louisville got right out of the gate with a 13-3 shot advantage in the first half. Forward Janelle Avila had a hand in all three first half goals. The junior Rhode Island native put the Cards up 1-0 connecting on a pass from sophomore Courtney Shepstone at the 11 minute mark. She also assisted on Jessica Javelet and Lisa Wasser’s first half scores. Syracuse attempted to get back in the game with a goal in the opening minutes of the second half, but Louisville responded. Senior Carrie Jackson came back with a rebound score off the Orange goalkeeper and Lisa Wasser added her second goal of the day later in the half to seal the victory for the Cards.
Louisville took on Vermont in game two on Saturday taking home their second win on the road trip 6-2. Lisa Wasser picked up where she left off on Friday with her first career hat trick against the Catamounts. Along with the three scores, Wasser dished out two assists as Bustin and company got out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back.
The field hockey team returns to play this Friday at 7 p.m. The 12th ranked Cards improve to 6-3 on the year and will take on UConn at Trager Stadium with the game featuring a U of L student beach party.
Soccer
Men’s
Sloppy conditions at Cardinal Park Saturday evening played a significant role as the men’s soccer team went down to St. John’s 1-0.
Despite holding a 4-3 shot advantage in the first half, the Red Storm put one into the back of the net in the 26th minute to go into the half with the lead.
Louisville continued to battle their opponents and the wet conditions all night and had two chances to tie things up late in the second half.
It appeared the Cards pulled even in the 82nd minute when junior Frank Jonke received a pass from freshman Othaniel Yanez and put the ball through the keeper’s legs for the equalizer. However, the score was called off due to an offsides call.
The Cards continued to pressure, controlling the ball and nearly tied the game up again on another Yanez cross in front of the goal, this time to Fred Braun, who missed the opportunity when he slipped on the damp field and was unable to get a foot on the ball.
Louisville has now dropped four of their last six games bringing their record to 3-5-1. They will travel to Cincinnati tomorrow to take on the Bearcats at 7 p.m. to begin a three game roadtrip.
Women’s
Off to the best start in school history, women’s soccer had a chance to make a statement on Sunday against the top ranked Irish as they traveled to South Bend. The Cards hung tough for 73 minutes of the game, but Notre Dame was too much, prevailing 2-0.
Carrie Drew got her first goal of the season off teammate Michele Wessenhofer’s free kick in the 74th minute. Ashley Jones added another late goal to put any hopes of a late Cardinal comeback to rest.
Despite the loss, Ferguson’s team is still off to their best start in school history at 6-1-1. They return to Louisville for a fourgame home stand beginning Friday against St. John’s. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
