The University of Louisville’s men’s tennis team upset 16th-ranked Notre Dame last Sunday afternoon in the finals of the Big East Championship, earning an automatic bid for the NCAA Tournament.
It was a day of upsets for the Cardinals.
The Cards’ Slavko Radman knocked off 18th-ranked Stephen Bass, while Jakob Gustafsson upset 35th-ranked Sheeva Parbhu.
The doubles teams swept the Fighting Irish to pick up the doubles point, while the duo of Jeremy Clark and Gustafsson defeated the 25th-ranked team from Notre Dame.
Nicolas Houard also picked up a win for U of L, while Damar Johnson fell in three sets.
The match extended what has become a great rivalry between the two teams. Last year, the Cardinals knocked off Notre Dame in the NCAA regionals with a 4-1 win. Notre Dame fought back by beating Louisville 5-2 in South Bend on April 13. With the win, Notre earned their top seed in this year’s Big East Tournament.
The men made it to the finals by shutting out DePaul and Marquette, 4-0 in each match.
The NCAA Team Championships begin on May 12.
