Intramural season ends this weekBy Matt Thacker

Winners in the intramural championship races are stepping forward as the semester winds down. With tennis, bowling, putt-putt and volleyball results not yet tallied or completed, the Baptist Student Union, Delta Zeta sorority and Sigma Chi fraternity all appeared to be headed toward victory.

The BSU is leading the overall campus points race with 1,440.5 points, while the Medical School team is in second with 1,010.

Mike LeCompte, a member of the BSU, has competed in several events this year including volleyball and the champion three-on-three basketball. He said the BSU teams’ success has been because of their ability to recruit people to play.

“We’ve done a good job about getting people involved in the events,” LeCompte said. “We have a very close group, and intramurals lets us get to know each other better.”

The closest race is among the fraternities, where Sigma Chi leads Sigma Alpha Epsilon 3,923.3 to 3,782.3. Seth Wiggins, intramural chair of Sigma Chi, said the fraternity has the title all but wrapped up and have already started printing items claiming that they are the fraternity points champion.

“The best thing is that it’s a great RUSH tool for the fall,” Wiggins said.

Wiggins said Sigma Chi won the title five years in a row before finishing runner-up the last two years. That is what gave them motivation to win this year.

When Wiggins took over as chair this year, he made it a goal to make sure people attended the intramural meetings. Teams get points for attending the meetings, and Wiggins said they had been losing points by not attending in the past.

Now they may have bragging rights for a year over their rivals SAE.

Wiggins said he hopes that the winning tradition continues and has already been working with other Sigma Chis to prepare for next year.

Delta Zeta leads the women’s points standings with 3,827.8 points, while Sigma Kappa has 3,310.6. Delta Zeta is looking to pick up their fourth straight championship.

The final events will be decided this week.
