The No. 9 University of Louisville (29-2) volleyball team is slated to take on in-state rival Western Kentucky (31-2) as the Cards host the first rounds of the 2005 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball tournament.

The teams will face off on Fri., Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m. at Louisville Gardens in downtown Louisville.

“We haven’t played Western Kentucky since 2000, so I haven’t seen them play since then. I keep track of how they are doing but not in the sense of what we would need to know to scout them” said U of L Head Coach Leonid Yelin. “They are winning and are a solid NCAA team.”

The University of Kentucky (17-11) will also face Maryland (27-4) in the first round. Their match is set for 5 p.m. on Friday.

“It will almost be like a mini-state championship of our state,” Yelin said.

The winners of the first-round matches will face off on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. for a spot in the regional competition in Omaha, Neb., hosted by No. 1 University of Nebraska. Louisville fell to the Huskers 3-0 in the third round of the 2004 tournament.

Tickets went on sale Monday, and are available from the U of L ticket office. Student tickets are available for $6 per session or $10 for all sessions. More information, including pricing and availability, is available by calling 852-5151.
