The University of Louisville Intramural Department caters to every type of athlete and is based on the motto, “A sport for everyone and everyone in a sport.”
Intramural sports are organized recreational sports leagues that allow students at U of L to participate in a variety of team, dual and individual sports against other U of L students, faculty and staff. U of L boasts over 30 different intramural sports to participate in during the fall and spring semesters. Thirteen club sports are also available.
“Intramurals are a great avenue to campus involvement,” said David Woock, the interim coordinator of Intramural Sports at the University of Louisville.
Intramurals provides students, faculty and staff with an excellent opportunity to exercise in an energetic, fun, fast-paced environment and improve their health. Participating in intramurals is an exciting chance to build friendships with teammates and meet new people among the competition.
Intramurals are also an opportune moment for high school athletes to continue their competitive athletic careers. Paid officiating opportunities are also available through the Intramural Department.
Intramural action is divided into two fields: Greek life and open divisions. The Greek division is limited to all fraternities and sororities while the open division gives those not interested in the Greek system a chance to showcase their skills.
Competition exists, but you do not have to be a seasoned, experienced athlete to play and have fun. All levels are welcomed. The real focus of intramural sports is health and exercise, social interaction, stress reduction, sportsmanship and teamwork.
According to Woock, the costs to join intramurals are reasonable compared to outside organized recreational sports leagues.
The cost of a full team is $35-$45 per sport, or you can register as a free agent.
Sports such as soccer, track and field, softball, tug-of-war, one-on-one basketball and flag football are among the most popular in the fall season.
