Did you lose your vibe after moving into the dorms? Are you inthe market for an adult magazine or video? Or maybe somethingkinkier?
Whether you’re new to Louisville or have lived here all yourlife, you might not be aware of the variety of adult bookstoresthat this town has to offer. While some residents of the city arenone too fond of these establishments, there’s nothing wrongwith incorporating a new toy or bit of sexual media into your life, whether you’re sharing it with a lover or going solo. Here’s where to go when you’re feeling blue:
The Lion’s Den
626 W. Broadway
2517 Seventh Street Road
Though the Lion’s Den has two area locations to serve yourneeds, I recommend you skip the Seventh Street Road store and headdowntown. There you will find a clean, well-lit store with afriendly but unobtrusive staff that will allow you to browsewithout interruption after they’ve checked your ID.
The Lion’s Den carries a large variety of movies arranged bygenre and star, a sizeable selection of magazines, lots and lots oftoys for men and women, lube and other sex potions, and asubstantial section of leather goods.
During the holiday season this store has been known to display ahuge inflatable penis decorated with tinsel, which they encouragetheir customers to sign.
Discount Adult Books/Sun Leather and
Lace /Wicked Leather
1501 S. Seventh Street
Discount Adult Books also discreetly goes by DAB, Inc., but itdoesn’t really matter if you call this store and the adjacentWicked Leather and Sun Leather and Lace by their proper names ornot; this trio of establishments is generally just referred to as”Seventh and Hill.”
If you’re in the market for run-of-the-mill toys, videos ormagazines, stick with the Lion’s Den, as their selection isfar superior to DAB’s. But this corner of the South Endcaters to a couple of unique niches that might interest you.
Sun Leather and Lace, located above DAB, sells costumes (and somecrazy shoes) for exotic dancers. And Wicked Leather is the place togo in Louisville for BDSM gear, as well as female impersonationequipment.
Seventh and Hill is perhaps a slightly seedier part of town thanthe Lion’s Den’s Broadway location, but the employeesare friendly (it seems that the same ones staff all three stores),and it’s definitely worth a trip if you’re in need ofcertain specialty items. It’s located conveniently close tocampus, too.
Priscilla’s
119 S. Hurstbourne Parkway
Sex stores go high class. Located in a shopping center on a stretchof Hurstbourne that includes a Barnes & Noble and a Starbucks,Priscilla’s is, to my knowledge, the only adult bookstore inthe East End.
This store has a decidedly feminine vibe, and if you’reinclined to be embarrassed upon venturing into these kinds ofplaces, this one will probably cause you the least discomfort.
The front part of the store is filled with trashy-in-a-good-waylingerie (with a plus-sized section), and behind a partition in theback you’ll find DVDs for sale or rent and sex toys.
Priscilla’s also carries a variety of instructional books, greeting cards, lubes, light BDSM gear and “adultnovelties” suitable for events such as bacheloretteparties.
This list is far from exhaustive, but if you’re looking foradult entertainment in the Louisville area these are good places tostart.
And who am I to say so? I’m your new Louisville Cardinal loveexpert, and I encourage you to write me with your questions, comments, and ideas.
