Things to do over fall break instead of homework

Fall break is just around the bend, and as hard as it may seem to make it through the next week, just remember that the glorious four-day weekend is on its way.

So what should you do? Homework? Absolutely not! Fall break is a time for not thinking of such things. It is a time to join the ranks of the lazy-asses and the procrastinators. Welcome to the fold!

If you are one of those people who live the charmed life and do not have to report to your place of employment for an excruciating day of work, then you are truly blessed. There are so many things that you should do.

First of all, make like Hefner and stay in your pajamas all day (for added flair, wear a smoking jacket). No use in being uncomfortable on your day of sloth- sorry, day off.

Watch movies: rent out the entire stock of your nearest Blockbuster if you have to. Some of the most relaxing days are spent in front of your DVD player or VCR. Recommendations for movies include Ghostbusters II, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Ghost World, This is Spinal Tap, Almost Famous, A Hard Day’s Night, and Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

Don’t watch anything too heavy or thought-provoking; save those for the weekends. During fall break, you only have two extra days to allow your mind to go slightly soft before midterms.

If you don’t want to stay in, there is always the movie theater and shopping. However, since Huber’s Farm is in its prime season, go indulge in biscuits and apple butter, pumpkin ice cream and cold apple cider. It’s good stuff, and seasonally appropriate too!

All of the various haunted houses are also appropriate and would be fun to go to over the break. There’s nothing like a good scare or a cheesy experience to make you and a couple of good friends laugh for ages.

On the more creative side, sketch, paint, write or read. Perhaps the most creative thing is to make mixed tapes (or CDs if you have the means) of how you’re feeling.

Pick songs out and make a audio journal- make those songs the soundtrack of your life. Make a mix of songs that are old favorites, new favorites, or that have a theme (like days of the week, with songs like “Ruby Tuesday” by the Rolling Stones, “Monday Monday” by the Mamas and the Papas, and “Days of the Week” by Stone Temple Pilots). That way, if you ever want to reminisce about the fall of 2002- all you have to do is pop in the tape and remember the good times you had.

Fall has some of the most beautiful and enjoyable weather, especially in Kentucky. So the best advice is to go out and enjoy it. Don’t sleep it away or only remember a drunken stupor; these ( as we have all been told) are the best days of our lives.

To paraphrase Ferris Bueller, life goes by fast, and if we don’t look around and check things out, we will miss it and it will be gone, left only to hindsight.

Fall break goes by fast, too. It’s the only break we students have until the hallowed winter break. So use it wisely, make it memorable, and for Pete’s sake–don’t do homework.
