Student forum to observe 9/11

The University of Louisville is hosting a youth forum for students throughout the Louisville area on September 11. “Moving Forward Together Toward Peace” will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Swain Student Activities Center.

Students at the forum will be broken into groups and have discussions, with topics such as how they felt on September 11, how they feel the world has changed since then, what their ideal world would be like, and how they can work to create that change, both individually and as a group.

U of L is having their own remembrance ceremony at noon in the Quadrangle in the center of Belknap Campus. The ceremony will be webcast throughout all three campuses. The bell tower near the SAC will chime six times September 11, at the time of each airplane crash and of the World Trade Center tower collapses.

The closing of the noon memorial will include students from the forum sharing their ideas. These ideas will also be included in a booklet which will be distributed to participating schools.

Schools throughout Jefferson County received fabric squares which they were to decorate based on the theme. A quilt made from these squares will be on display at various locations, including U of L.

Faculty and staff from the School of Education who helped to plan the forum are Nancy Cunningham, Laura Cherry, Vickie Guthrie, Jerry Sklare, and Jeff Hicks, a doctoral student.

Members of the Education Sub-Committee include representatives from U of L, Jefferson County Public Schools, the Catholic archdiocese, Muhammad Ali Institute, Muhammad Ali Center, and the Center for Safe Urban School Communities. The Education Sub-Committee is part of the Louisville Remembers 9/11 Committee.

SGA is volunteering, as well as the President’s office, admissions, alum, communications, and the staff at the SAC. They have helped with planning and have donated things.

Meals and snacks for the students attending the forum will be provided by Krispy Kreme, the American Red Cross, and the Salvation Army.
