MITC employee maimed on Eastern PkwyBy Carrie Howard

U of L employee James T. Travelstead was struck by a car Wednesday, September 11, while attempting to cross Eastern Parkway in front of the Speed Scientific School.

Travelstead, along with others, was crossing the road during a “walk” signal, while cars were given a red light. The car that hit Travelstead was driven by an elderly woman who, according to Lt. Tom Fitzgerald of the University Police, “made no attempt to stop.” Travelstead was reportedly thrown from one crosswalk to the next by the impact.

Travelstead was admitted to University Hospital with multiple injuries, including two broken legs. He was also monitored for head trauma. He has since been released, and is currently undergoing rehabilitation.

Beverly Coleman, one of Travelstead’s Miller Information Technology co-workers, commented on the event. “I think the university needs to put a U of L police car on Eastern Parkway in the mornings. That way people will slow down. I have seen about three students get hit in my 13-14 years of working here.”

A full investigation is being conducted by the Louisville Police Department.
