Alycia Erin Smith, 19, of Richmond, Kentucky, died Friday evening, May 17, 2002, at the Jenny Stuart Medical Center in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, from injuries received in a motor vehicle accident.
Alycia was born on August 15, 1982, in State College, Pennsylvania. She was a student at the University of Louisville, enrolled in the honors program, majoring in English, and served as a columnist for The Louisville Cardinal.
She was a 2000 graduate of Madison Central High School, graduating with honors. As a student at Madison Central, she was involved with several clubs and organizations. She played the piano, oboe, and marimba in the Marching Band, Jazz Band and Concert Band. She was an Honor Roll student and was a member of the French Club.
Alycia was involved in community activities as well. She was a member of the Richmond Area Children’s Theatre, The Richmond Adult Theatre, the Madison Music Makers and the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra. She was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church, where she actively participated in the youth group and cantored. She also enjoyed writing poetry and did creative writing with the Governor’s School for the Arts.
Survivors include her parents, Gil and Carla Africano Smith of Richmond; a brother, Turner Smith of Richmond; her paternal grandmother, Betty Smith of Rochester, New York; her maternal grandparents, William and Florence Africano of Richmond and Webster, New York; and several aunts and uncles.
