Cardinal Women's team in fourth after second day of C-USA ChampionshipsBy

Senior Trish Young finished second in the javelin to lead the University of Louisville Friday in day two of the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Cardinal Park.

The Cardinal women are currently in fourth place with 37 points, while the men’s squad is tied for eighth with 10 points.

Houston leads the women’s 13-team competition with 57 points, followed by Marquette (55) and South Florida (47.5). On the men’s side, Cincinnati leads with 37 points, followed by Charlotte (35), DePaul (33) and TCU (28).

Young, was shooting for her third javelin title after winning in 1998 and 2000. The senior recorded a mark of 160 feet, three inches, just seven inches from her all-time best throw. Tulane’s freshman, Helmi Leppanen broke the Conference USA record with a toss of 165-7 to win the event.

Louisville Freshman Kelley Bowman tied for second in the high jump with a height of 5-6.5.

In the long jump, junior Brittany Hedgepeth finished third with a mark of 19-0.75.

Junior Cindy Roberson and freshman Jacey Hughes tied for third place in the pole vault by clearing 11-11.75.

Senior Alicia Cavender advanced to Saturday’s finals in both the 1500m and 800m runs. Cavender qualified with the sixth fastest time in the 1500m (4:39.01), yet she came in first in her heat. The Piqua, Ohio, native set a new school record in the 800m with a time of 2:10.83, which was the third fastest on the day.

The Cardinals qualified two runners in the women’s 400m hurdles. Senior Nicole Cottmon (1:02.34) ran the fourth fastest time and junior Stefanie Wooten had the ninth best mark of 1:06.52 to advance to Saturday’s final.

Junior Marea Ingwersen broke her own school record in the 3000m steeplechase with a ninth-place time of 11:11.13.

On the men’s side: Senior David Mudd advanced to the finals of the 400m hurdles with a personal-best time of 54.16, eighth-best on the evening. Sophomore Jeff Adams placed sixth in the decathlon with 5,720 points and senior John Wawrysh was seventh in the shot put with a personal-best toss of 47-5. The third and final day of the competition will begin Saturday with the men’s javelin at 11 a.m. at the throws field located near Eastern Parkway behind Parkway Field. The first event at Cardinal Stadium is at 12 p.m. with the women’s triple jump. Running events begin at 4 p.m.
