Bring Midnight Madness

Growing up an avid college basketball fan, it doesn't take much to get me excited for University of Louisville basketball. However, it takes more than a red and white scrimmage.
I attended last year's red and white scrimmage and didn't leave with anticipation of watching the Cards in their season opener. After the first five minutes, I spent the majority of the time text messaging friends who weren't at the game and talking to friends at the game about things irrelevant to U of L basketball. I left long before the game ended and didn't care to read about the game the next day.

It has been played by angels for centuries and was once placed on a pedestal as a fragile, classical instrument, but is now seen by many as a dying art. Stereotypes have followed the harp for years. But Jordan Andrew, a sophomore English and Spanish major, has brought a different sensibility to the harp: unconventional, complex, and down-to-earth.

Philosophy professor Robert Urekew remembers his time as a student when his professor addressed the class: "you better be wearing a sport coat when you come into my classroom."
"One day," said Urekew, "a student came to class wearing only a sport coat and a jockstrap."
When it comes to picking out appropriate clothes for class, some have a harder time than others.

Waving her hands in front of a red Dixie cup filled to the brim with beer, Nicole Emberg attempts to distract the two guys at the other end of the table.
As her hands move back and forth swiftly, Eric Winstead pulls his arm back to a 90-degree angle and lightly floats a white ping pong ball into the air.
The ball hits the top of the cup, rims around the edge and falls onto the wooden table.
Emberg, with her teammate, Marissa Hibbs, a fellow peer at St. Catherine College in Bardstown, scream in elation, knowing they have secured victory in the drinking game known as Beer Pong.
"Yes!," exclaimed Emberg, as she gives high fives to her onlooking girlfriends.
Winstead and his team partner, bar owner William Harlow, hang their heads in defeat.
"Owner gets beat by girls," says Robbie Keith, another employee at the bar, grinning at Harlow.

Last September, Louisville and Middle Tennessee State combined for 1,284 total yards of offense in a 58-44 victory for the Cardinals. Since then, a lot has changed, particularly on the defensive side of the ball.

Louisville's new defensive coordinator Ron English has made his presence known in his first season with the Cards. His main goal from the beginning was to change the whole mentality of the defense. After giving up 555 yards of offense to the Raiders last season, the Cardinals needed a change of mentality.

It's not too often students get to experience an athlete show off their skills in two varsity sports.
University of Louisville freshman Gwen Rucker, however, is a dual-sport athlete as a middle hitter for the volleyball team and  a forward for the women's basketball team.
"I haven't experienced playing both sports [at the collegiate level] yet, since I've only played one (volleyball), but I know it will be hard," Rucker said. "I like it because you get to go from one sport to the other. I get bored really easily, so when I get done with one sport I can transition into the other sport."
