Arts & Sciences is piloting a new application for recording community service. Called MobileServe, the app allows administration and users to record hours, publicize service, post pictures and interact with others in community service both locally and globally.
“Our goal is to do more good,” MobileServe Co-Founder Christopher Head said at a public tutorial.
Some faculty were concerned about the privacy settings of the application, specifically with posting pictures as a university representative.
“Usually permissions are required for public posting of pictures and identifying information on web pages,” one faculty member said. “This service doesn’t even consider this issue.”
Head assured attendants that his company is “not the NSA,” and offers solutions to privacy concerns. The application allows administrators to remove pictures or delete profiles of users when needed and does not collect phone data. MobileServe will soon allow administrators to turn off user permissions to post as well, controlling when and where posts are made under the university name.
“I don’t think it’s an issue as long as everyone understands the rules,” A&S Dean Kimberly Kempf-Leonard said.
The pilot will last a year and a half and cost upwards of $3,000. Costs may adjust based on how much it’s used.
“It’s an opportunity to brag,” Kempf-Leonard said. “It’s worth trying I think.”
