New residence hall coming to campus

By Olivia Krauth–

Goodbye, The Complex. Hello, University Pointe. Construction has started on U of L’s newest on-campus housing option, University Pointe. It is set to open in fall 2016.

Located in the former location of The Complex, University Pointe will have 532 beds arranged in four-bedroom, four-bathroom apartments. Amenities include a fitness center, group study rooms, pool and a courtyard.

“As you can see from the pictures, we think it will be an attractive addition to our campus,” said Jason Tomlinson, the U of L Foundation’s AVP of Finance and Business Affairs. “We also think that students will love the location, as it is ideally situated between the library, rec center and dining facilities.”

The hall is designed for returning students with a lower RA-to-resident ratio. The Pointe will be one of the few options for upperclassmen since U of L ruled to make on-campus housing freshmen-only, with exceptions.

The Pointe comes with a $44.2 million price tag, but Tomlinson says U of L won’t be paying for it.

“This project is different from our other dorms because it is privately financed by American Campus Communities (ACC) and there are no tuition, state or Foundation dollars involved,” Tomlinson said. ACC owns The Province and Cardinal Towne, two affiliated housing options, but University Pointe will not be an affiliated housing option.

“This is not unlike Cardinal Towne or The Province in some aspects,” Tomlinson said. “They will make their money back over time through rents. The difference is the University has more say in the operations of the dorm because it will be managed by a combined committee of U of L and ACC representatives.”

According to Tomlinson, ACC will also make land lease payments to U of L and will fund some student life initiatives in the hall.

“ACC has a long history of working for students and providing student housing. They have worked hard to provide amenities, study areas and gathering spaces for the residents who will live there,” Tomlinson said.
