Bill Clinton meets with U of L mens’ basketball team after win against Villanova
The U of L mens’ basketball team received a locker room visit after their victory over Villanova in the Big East tournament quarterfinals. Coach Rick Pitino and Clinton have known each other since the 1990s so after celebrating the win, he stayed for about ten minutes posing for pictures and talking with the team about becoming a president and traveling. He also spent some time talking to Gorgui Dieng about Senegal. Chane Behanan took a cue from Russ Smith and gave the former president bunny ears in a few pictures with the team and staff.
Argentine Jorge Mario Bergolio elected pope
Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergolio of Buenos Aires was elected pope by an assembly of his peers on March 13. Bergolio took the name of Francis listing Saint Francis of Assisi, a thirteenth friar who provided care for the indigent, as his name sake. Bergolio is a member of the Jesuit Order, a former chemist, a wine enthusiast and an avid soccer fan. The 76-year old son of Italian immigrants is the first pope to be elected from the Americas. Bergolio succeeded Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.
Online Transfer Madness to connect Kentucky students to other universities
About 25 representatives from the admissions office participated March 6 in Transfer Madness, a statewide online transfer fair. From 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., nearly 1,600 prospective transfer students chatted online with agents from Kentucky’s four-year institutions. On the same day, U of L representatives also admitted 19 students during an event at Jefferson Community & Technical College. U of L admissions staff worked one-hour shifts with at least three agents involved at all times throughout the day. Officials say they hope to begin connecting with students via Skype.
Program to employ Louisville women and minorities for new bridge construction
Governor Steve Beshear announced a new innitiative this week to train female and minority business owners in construction skills. Beshear said that he expected the program to lead to job creation as trainees will be considered for employment for the Ohio River Bridges Project. All construction on the ORBP is expected to be completed by 2016 because of the initiative. [email protected]
