On Tuesday, Sept. 29th, at 12:50 p.m., a woman drove her car across U of L’s campus to avoid the police.  The car jumped over the curb on Third Street and drove from the entrance of The Speed Art Museum to the sidewalk between Ekstrom Library and the law buildings.

Witness Lauren Blansit described the car as a white Cavalier.  Another witness, Ashleigh Steever, said the woman looked to be in her 50’s, with short blonde hair.  Blansit noticed that as the car turned towards the center of campus, it was headed towards a large group of students walking on the sidewalk.

The car was spotted by police and immediately turned again towards Third Street.  Steever said the woman traveled south on the sidewalk next to Third Street but when she crossed in front of a building she could no longer see where she was headed. It was not until the vehicle crossed the entire length of the library that the girls fully grasped what had happened.

“I am almost disturbed by how amused by it I was,” said Steever.

“The traffic stopped in amazement,” added Blansit.

The girls noticed damage to the side of the car that led them to believe the woman had been involved in a hit and run.  The police were in pursuit of the car when students in Library last saw it.

“I am just glad I wasn’t one of the pedestrians walking,” said Steever.
