According to University of Louisville Police Lt. Colonel Kenny Brown, campus police received a report of an assault on the Belknap Campus near the Ekstrom Library Monday.
According to Brown, a student said she was walking near the library when she heard a call for help. The student saw a girl being assaulted by two men. The student intervened in the assault, and was assaulted herself, Brown said. Brown said the attackers apparently displayed a knife during the altercation. The student apparently drove herself to Baptist Hospital East after the assault, where she is being treated for minor injuries.
According to Brown, the student said the first victim was up against a wall by the loading dock on the south of Ekstrom, where she was being assaulted. According to the student, the first victim appeared to have Down syndrome. Police have not been able to contact the first victim.
According to Brown, the incident occurred between 11:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Baptist Hospital called Louisville Metro Police who then called U of L Police. After University Police had interviewed the victim over the phone, a campus alert was sent out to students via e-mail and text messaging. The alert went out about 1:45 p.m.
Brown said University Police will now interview the victim again, and hope to obtain more details from her. Police will then review security camera footage from the area, and interview any university employees who may have been in the area.According to Brown, the attackers are being described as two black males, one 6’2″ to 6’3″ with an afro with grey spots, and the other between 5’8″ and 5’9″ with a shaved head.  Both were wearing black t-shirts, and beaten-up white tennis shoes. According to the victim, the men appeared to be homeless.
