University of Louisville and the student government association which backed it, unveiled a meal plan last spring that they said was prompted by longstanding requests by students for more and better dining options on campus according to an article in yesterday’s Courier-Journal.
Now, U of L may lower the meal plan cost for those full-time students who commute. The new plan would lower the mandatory cost by $75 to $175 a semester, from $250.
The article stated that citing tough economic times facing many students and their families, U of L is proposing to reduce the amount it will charge commuter students for the mandatory meal plan set to take effect this fall.
The proposal comes partly in response to complaints from some students and their parents, who argued that the mandatory fee would add to the economic strain caused by rising tuition costs. They said the plan would force them to spend more money than if they bought food off campus. The proposal must be approved by the university’s board of trustees next month as reported by Nancy Rodriguez of the Courier-Journal.
