The Math Resource Center showed off its newly renovated facilities last Wednesday, opening its doors to students, faculty and staff. The open house featured a “Hawaiian Winter” theme and free food, music and raffle drawings.

Renovations began last November and were completed over winter break and consist of new lighting, wiring, vents and sprinklers. The center was newly painted, refurnished, and equipped with a small room for the Virtual Math Center, which includes new hutches for the computers and new lightboards.

Carrye Wilkins, coordinator of the Math Resource Center, said the MRC has “many resources, such as videos [of lectures], tutors who can catch students up on things they miss, Math XL on the computers and a variety of tutors from different colleges, majors and backgrounds to help students feel their most comfortable.”

The Virtual Math Center is one of many academic services offered by REACH. Students can access the online tutoring system and get help on nights and weekends when the Math Resource Center is closed. Access to the Virtual Math Center can be gained through Blackboard. In addition to this online help, the Math Resource Center also holds seminars and specialized tutoring for Math 151, 152 and 105.

U of L junior Terrance Washington considers REACH and its services a valuable asset to the university. “In general, [the MRC] assists me with subjects such as math, physics and chemistry. All students, especially freshmen, should utilize these resources,” he said. “Any student with a lack of basic fundamental skills shouldn’t be afraid to come here.”

Another junior, Adam Duckworth, said he really liked the MRC and learned about its tutoring services through fliers handed out in his math class.

As far as plans to renovate any other part of REACH, Executive Director Cathy Leist said, “There are plans, but none definite enough to go with right now.”
