The current Student Government Association conflict involving President Carlton Brown’s call for Dr. Denise Gifford’s resignation demonstrates a profound failure of the University of Louisville’s SGA to operate in an effective manner. The breakdown in communication within the SGA is both the fault and responsibility of the SGA executive board, the SGA Senate, and you, members of the student body.

At the emergency SGA meeting on November 27, the executive board dominated the meeting and effectively removed any criticism of their policy from the night’s agenda. They countered any criticism of their policy with accusations of racism. By limiting student input to three statements from an audience of approximately 150, they barred the possibility of diverse student input from taking place.

The SGA Senate, during this emergency meeting, appeared to be ill-informed of the issues at hand and unable to form resolute proposals to offer as a solution. The Senate, as a whole, has been spineless in its passive acceptance of executive policy. The editorial board of The Louisville Cardinal believes that, if the senate disapproves of the call for Dr. Gifford’s resignation, it must take a vote to challenge that statement.

Finally, The Cardinal believes that the student body of U of L must challenge its SGA and make it clear what type of action it would like in regard to the myriad of issues that have emerged since the TKE debacle. The University belongs to all of us.
