Valentine’s Day conjures up images of chocolates, hearts, chocolate-covered hearts, and a baby with wings who goes around shooting people with a bow and arrow. Despite the creepy winged baby, this holiday typically tends to be welcomed by many because of its perks: a lot of candy, pink everything, and a one-day pass to be as romantic as your creative mind can handle. That being said, Cupid’s so-called love arrow can actually hurt, meaning that Valentine’s Day tends to have some downsides.

For some, the downside is that there is no special person out there with whom to spend this day. These people have not had the fortune of meeting that special someone. Sometimes that special someone has just left and, as a result, you now have a blue valentine on your hands. To help solve this issue, let us try to make sure everyone has a happy holiday. If you are taking a lovely stroll down the sidewalk and notice anyone who seems not to be enjoying Valentine’s Day, wish them a happy Valentine’s Day and, if the opportunity arises, shower them with any extra candy that does not belong to your girlfriend, your boyfriend or your tummy. This will surely raise anyone’s spirits.

Another downside to this loving holiday is the cost of love. Chocolates, roses, cards, extremely large stuffed animals – all of these gifts add up in price. I am not saying stop getting gifts for your significant other, unless you would like to join the blue valentine list. Try taking a different approach that will make your significant other’s Valentine’s Day the best that he or she has ever had.

For guys, girls love a gift that comes from the heart, which works in your favor. Make a card that shows how much you care, rather than buying one. This shows that you care enough about this person to make them something, rather than buy them something from a store. And it also saves you money. Chocolates are almost a necessity for many ladies to be happy on Valentine’s Day. But instead of paying for an expensive Valentine’s Day special set, buy a cheaper set of chocolate and make it into something creative. For example, you could buy a pack of Reese’s Pieces, which cost little more than $1, and arrange them to say something lovey-dovey, like “I love you” or “Be Mine.” By doing this, the men out there can show how much they care about their lady friends, while not having to empty their wallet because of a winged baby holding them at bow-point.

For ladies, believe it or not, men often consider just being with their significant other as a form of celebration. But, for those planning to go the extra mile, you can also be creative. Instead of spending a lot of money on something the guy will appreciate the thought of, but will forget the next day, make them something that they will actually use. If your man plays guitar, personalize a guitar pick for him. If your man likes video games, spend a part of the day playing his favorite one together. I know men often put on the tough guy exterior, but spending time with their lady friends really means a lot to them. Don’t feel bad about not getting them many gifts – just be there with them.

As long as you keep these things in mind, a blue valentine will be nothing more than a sad song on an awesome day. Happy Valentine’s Day, Louisville.
