Joining a sorority or fraternity is a great way to get involved in campus life at U of L. All the sororities and fraternities emphasize the importance of leadership, scholarship and involvement. Some people think how can you have the time to get involved in other organizations on campus if you are in a sorority or fraternity?

“You have to make blocks for yourself. A certain amount of time to be social, and a certain amount of time to study. That is what college life is all about,” said Jennifer Cambron, a member of Chi Omega sorority. Not only is Jennifer involved in Chi Omega sorority, but she is also involved in Chi Alpha, a bible study organization.

Most U of L sororities and fraternities require every member to be involved in at least one other organization on campus. Ben Truby and Frankie Hilbert from Lamda Chi Alpha fraternity are both involved in the L-Raisers, formerly known as the Red-C, U of L’s spirit club.

” I don’t find it to hard to manage my time between the L-Raisers and the fraternity because the L-Raisers only have a meeting once a month,” Ben Truby said.

Frankie Hilbert said he manages his time doing both: ” I spend an equal amount of time with both clubs, I am not bias to one or the other.”

Kate Dupin, from Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, is also involved in the band. “It isn’t hard to manage my time between both I just had to learn how to set my priorities straight,” Duplin said. Besides being in Delta Zeta sorority, Lauren Katz is also involved in the Student Art League, which has meetings once a month, art auctions and art shows.

Besides individual involvement, fraternities and sororities host events that get everyone on campus involved, no matter if you are Greek or not. When Pike fraternity hosts parties off campus, they allow anyone who is at least 18-years old to attend. Pike also hosts Big Brother/Big Sister, and they plan on hosting a Violence Awareness Night.

Dan Walker from Phi Kappa Tau is also the president of Greeks Advocating the Mature Management of Alcohol. In October, GAMMA plans on having a National Alcohol Awareness Week. Alpha Omicron Pi sorority host an event called “Guys and Dolls” every fall, which draws involvement from a variety of organizations. The money Alpha Omicron Pi raises through Guys and Dolls goes towards their national philanthropy. Community Service and helping out their philanthropy is also a big part of Greek life. Involvement is an important part of being in a sorority or fraternity because what you put into an organization is what you will get out of it.
