Carnal Knowledge Not Common Knowledge

As a sexual health educator, Kari Kuka has heard some of the craziest and most incorrect myths and rumors about sex among college students. Though it's a part of the job she encounters daily, she still cringes at how misinformed college students can be when it comes to sex. "One girl I met this summer believed that herpes was more of a problem now than in the past because of the popularity of beer pong," she said. That is just a small part of the misinformation that college students have and perpetuate about sexual intercourse, and it makes the task of Kuka and other sexual health educators all the more difficult.

Jessica Amin has had to resort to strange survival tactics in a week without power. The senior child psychology major found herself volunteering in Anne Northup's campaign office on Wednesday for Internet access in order to finish a biology paper.
"Literally every single person I knew didn't have power," Amin said. "I had to come into the office to volunteer because even the two libraries by my house were without power."

Felner affects alumni giving

Standing around a table, University of Louisville alumni Randy Reeves and Mark Ranall converse about every day topics like the possible outcome of the upcoming U of L football game.
When the name Felner is mentioned, however, the conversation becomes a little more serious.

Column: Cards still have hope

This week, the 2008 University of Louisville football season truly begins.
Yes, I know the Cards officially started their season almost a month ago against a hated archrival, looking nothing like a team with any chance of crashing the postseason.
I know they came onto the field again a week later against a team that didn't have any business being on the same field as the Cards.
Then there was last Wednesday, which is the game fans will point to if U of L manages to make any noise on a national level.

Professor Blackboard cannot replace real professor

Feel like skipping class?
It might be alright if you're lucky enough to have a professor who teaches with Powerpoint slides and posts them on Blackboard.
Blackboard can be anything from a helpful academic resource or something else to do, but sometimes it's not used effectively. And in some cases, replaces the professor entirely.

Students encouraged to ‘Pack the Parks’

2008-09-22T00:00:00-04:00September 22nd, 2008|Uncategorized|

Over the past couple of years, the University of Louisville Athletic Department has made a point to promote the non-major sports to U of L students and fans alike. On Sunday, U of L will continue that initiative with a three-pronged plan to "Pack the Parks."
The "Pack the Parks" event consists of three different sporting events, two of which being simultaneous. The U of L men's soccer squad will kick things off at 1 p.m. against Big East opponent Notre Dame at Cardinal Park. Also at 1 p.m., the field hockey team will be taking on Iowa at Trager Stadium.

U of L halts Wildcats with young studs

The University of Louisville football team will open up Big East play against the University of Connecticut Friday. The Cardinals have something to prove in the conference, after they were chosen to finish seventh out of eight teams in a preseason media poll.
The team, on the other hand, isn't worrying about any preseason rankings.
"We are underdogs," Victor Anderson, freshman running back, said. "I don't really think that means anything. That's just a personal opinion of someone."
The Cards come into the game on a two-game win streak, including their most recent win over Kansas State University last week. The win was an acceptable for coach Steve Kragthorpe, but less than satisfying.

New head coach looks to continue building on success

For University of Louisville assistant cross country coach Brice Allen, a promotion to head coach couldn't happen without a great deal of determination.
After years of hard work, the determination has paid off, as he was recently named the new men and women's cross country coach.
Allen has served for the last four seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for U of L's cross country and track and field squads under Ron Mann for the last four seasons.

DPS upgrades its call systems

When walking on campus late at night, Anna Villereal said she finds safety in numbers.
"There are several nights of the week when I have to walk back to my dorm really late," said Villereal, a freshman fine arts major. "I found the best way to deal with this is to walk back with people going to or where I am, this way I feel a little more protected."
This year the Department of Public Safety has changed its emergency number to 911. For students like Villereal, who fear an attack while walking on campus, this change may be of little use – it only works for landline phones on campus.
