Painting the Night

In a local Louisville park, a crowd stands seemingly caught in a subconscious energy. Forgetting the scent of kerosene in the air, the night seems darker than normal compared to the spinning balls of fire and the man dancing within them. While this may sound like an excerpt from a science fiction story, this display is one viewed by many U of L students and spectators around Louisville.

Last week marked the first meeting of a new University of Louisville initiative to improve school spirit.

The aptly named "Nest" initiative has been formed through a three way partnership between the U of L Athletics Department, the Student Government Association and the University President's Office. The purpose of the effort, according to their most recent agenda, is to "promote school spirit through the student body for all of the university's athletic endeavors.

As a student, I expected to find decent food, especially considering that names such as Subway, Wendy's and Papa John's are familiar dining services.
However, in the mere five weeks on campus, I've experienced my share of bad food.
Veggie subs scarce in vegetables, broccoli and cheese baked potatoes that smell of vomit and deep dish pizza, topped with a thick layer of grease.

All my life, I've dreamed about sitting amongst the "Cameron Crazies" at Duke University.
It's hard not to be a little jealous. Every time I watch a Duke game on television, the students look like they are having the time of their lives and are actually having an impact on the game's results.

Traditionally, sexism meant judging a person based on their sex. Sexism is manifested in disenfranchisement and workplace discrimination.
However, since America has made tremendous strides in fixing this sexism (nearly 60 percent of college students are female), the definition of these terms must change to keep the term relevant.

Sleep is a fundamental part of human health; research has concluded that a good night's sleep helps the immune system function and improves memory, concentration and attention. For many students, however, a good quality sleep can be hard to achieve.
According to an anonymous Campus Health Services survey last spring, 31.5 percent of University of Louisville students say sleep difficulties negatively affect their academic performance.

This week, a letter will be released to graduate students at the University of Louisville concerning the investigation into  former College of Education and Human Development Dean Robert Felner.
Felner is currently being investigated for allegedly misappropriating $694,000 in federal grant money. The university has also formed a committee to investigate the awarding of a Ph.D. to former U of L graduate student John Deasy, who reportedly only studied for nine credit hours at U of L.

Walking to his 9 a.m. international relations class, Sean Spille wasn't expecting anything more than just the average morning lecture.
Spille, a sophomore political science major, was in for a rude early hour awakening.
As he reached a crosswalk for Third Street, Spille was waved to walk across by an individual in a white truck. Once he began crossing, an aqua colored car ran into him, causing him to flip up onto the car's windshield and off onto the road.

With 85 percent of U.S. jobs requiring schooling past high school, the American Dream is more dependent on education than ever before.  But, with a struggling economy and college tuition up 31 percent in the last five years, that dream is growing further out of reach for millions of Americans.

The University of Louisville football team was looking for a measure of revenge Friday night when the Connecticut Huskies came to town for the Big East opener. The players and fans alike all remember last year's heartbreaking loss to the Huskies, 21-17, because of a controversial call on a fair catch.
