Student Health 101: The Science of Sleep

2008-10-22T00:00:00-04:00October 22nd, 2008|Uncategorized|

It's no secret that many college students get less than the optimal seven to nine hours of sleep needed, according to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF). In a recent Student Health 101 survey, over 48% of respondents said they frequently or occasionally had trouble sleeping. Stephanie Kane, a senior at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, says she often has trouble sleeping due to general anxiety about the tasks she must accomplish the next day.

Meal Plan

After having his hand raised for a good 15 minutes, a student is called on by SGA President Rudy Spencer. He rises from his seat and asks a question directed to Spencer. "Do you honestly think there are more people who support this meal plan than don't?"
"Yes," Spencer answered. The end of his statement was followed by laughter and sounds of disbelief among the people crowded in the SAC's Multi-purpose room.
On Tuesday October 20, Spencer along with Sudexo representatives held a two hour forum to address concerns regarding the mandatory meal plan that will be implemented fall 2008.

Q:  What political position are you running for and why?
-The Louisville Cardinal

A: I'm running for Congress and I think it's important that this community has strong independent leadership that can help move us forward to prepare for the future. We have to compete against Indianapolis, Nashville and St. Louis.

Red and blue clash at PJCS

2008-10-21T00:00:00-04:00October 21st, 2008|Uncategorized|

I see it all the time, yet it never gets old. I walk to my seats at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium and look around, only to find colors of another team sitting next to me.
And these just aren't any colors: it's the color blue. As in University of Kentucky blue.
Which would be fine, if U of L was playing UK. But that happens once every other year. UK gear finds its way into PJCS every game.

Ticket lottery must be eliminated

Each year the student season ticket distribution process seems to get worse and worse.
The last two years, the Student Government Association used a lottery system where students who wanted season tickets came out to an athletic facility, signed up in groups of 25 for a designated number thrown in a hat or bag of some sort and then waited to hear their number.
The lottery can seem fair, but I don't agree with it because no matter how big of a fan you are, you could still end up with the worst seats.

Shuttle could transport students

Riding a shuttle is nothing new for University of Louisville students. Most do it everyday to and from classes.
Papa John's Cardinal Stadium provides parking for students close to campus and the shuttle cuts down on the time spent traveling from PJCS to campus and back.
The sad part is days where students want to go to PJCS – when the U of L football team is playing at home – there isn't any other way to get us there, other than walking.

Placement of student section needs direction

At this point in my life, there is nothing more thrilling than attending a University of Louisville basketball game.
There is one small problem: the location of the student section.
I know several schools' student sections are behind one of the baskets, but in such a large arena as Freedom Hall, the student section is isolated and it affects their performance.

Bring Midnight Madness

Growing up an avid college basketball fan, it doesn't take much to get me excited for University of Louisville basketball. However, it takes more than a red and white scrimmage.
I attended last year's red and white scrimmage and didn't leave with anticipation of watching the Cards in their season opener. After the first five minutes, I spent the majority of the time text messaging friends who weren't at the game and talking to friends at the game about things irrelevant to U of L basketball. I left long before the game ended and didn't care to read about the game the next day.
