Men’s soccer

The Louisville men’s soccer team enters in the 2013 season as one of three fall sports

clubs ranked in the top 25 entering the season at #10. Despite the loss of number one overall

MLS draft choice Andrew Farrell, the Cardinals return key players such as senior forward Zach

Foxhoven, junior mid-fielder Will Vitalis, and sophomore mid-fielder Marlon Hairston along

with a plethora of new talented contributors.

After a 1-0-2 record in exhibition games against Lindsey Wilson, Michigan, and #19

Northwestern, Ken Lolla’s squad was set to face off against #20 Virginia. The Cardinals

prevailed 2-1 against the Cavaliers with goals by senior Jimmy Ockford and sophomore Ricardo

Velazco. The game winning header put in by Ockford in the 63rd minute came off the foot of

freshman Andrew Brody who earned an assist in his first collegiate game. The defense held off

the UVA attack for the final 27 minutes to seal the win.

Velazeco earned AAC Player of the Week with a goal and assist in the top 25 showdown

against Virginia. Next on the slate for the newly ranked #7 Cards was the home opener against

Cleveland State. After a slow start the Cardinals were able to pull away from the Vikings in the

second half. Redshirt junior Daniel Keller and sophomore Jerry Rameriz propelled U of L with

goals off assists by Romilio Hernandez on a free kick and Andrew Brody’s second assist of the

year.

The seventh-ranked Louisville Cardinals men’s soccer team lost to Butler University 1-0

Saturday night. Louisville was looking for its best start to a season since 2009, but instead

dropped to an overall record of 2-1-0 on the season.

The lone goal of the game came from Butler first-year forward Anthony Smith Jr. In the

final minutes of the first half, Smith played a long cross from second-year midfielder into the left

side of the box and scored on the inside the near post with just 1:02 left before the half.

Cardinal goalkeeper Joachim Ball dropped his first game in three starts, but finished with

four saves. For the Bulldogs, third-year GK Andy Holte finished with a shutout in his first start

of the season.

“There are a lot of lessons from the game. Butler is a good opponent and we just didn’t

play well enough tonight,” said Louisville head coach Ken Lolla. “We weren’t sharp. Our

pressure wasn’t good enough tonight and the effort needed to be better. That’s the lesson and the

message to the guys tonight. We have a week to prepare and get it right for the next one on

Friday night.”

Louisville continues its four-game home stand with a match against UC Irvine. The

Cardinals will face the Anteaters Friday, September 13 at 7 p.m. at Cardinal Park.

Men’s Golf

Expectations for the 2013 U of L men’s golf are very high as head coach Mark Crabtree

returns multiple talented golfers from his previous squad. The first tournament of the year was

Northern Intercollegiate in Aurora, Illinois. The Cardinals brought in six golfers with Max Walz,

Antoine Le Saux, Robin Sciot-Siegrist, Trevor Sluman, Gus Lundquist, and Ben Montgomery.

Sophomore Robin Sciot-Siegrist is the biggest name returning as he posted 8 top finishes last

year and lead the team with a 72.8 stroke average.

After the first round of the Northern Intercollegiate the Cardinals are placed in seventh after

shooting 298, 19 strokes off the lead. Max Walz had the best day out of the six Cards who

participated in the event as he sits in 11th place after 71. Antonie Le Saux and Robin SciotSiegrist are tied for 33rd after the first round with a stroke of 75.

Freshman Robert Geibel and sophomore Gus Lundquist competed in the U.S. Amateur Open

prior to the Northern Intercollegiate. Geibel finished in a tie for 223rd overall after shooting 75

and 78, while Lundquist was tied for 248th by carding 78 and 77.

This was not the only highlight of Lundquist’s offseason as he and six other Cardinals were

selected for the All Big East Academic team. Daniel Iceman, Antonie Le Saux, Chris Malec,

Trevor Sluman, Henry Tomlinson, and Robin Sciot-Siegrist were the other six Cardinals

selected.

Women’s Soccer

The 2013 season offers a great opportunity for the Lady Cardinals soccer team as Notre Dame

and Marquette, both dominate fixtures in the conference in previous years, have departed from

the conference. Also, the team brings back plenty of experience from a 10 win season. Along

with experience, the incoming freshman class provides a good mixture of proven talent and new

young faces.

The home and season opener was won against Butler University by a score of 2-0 with goals by

seniors Christine Exeter and Charlyn Corral. The next two games were taken to overtime as the

Lady Cardinals couldn’t notch a win in either match up. A heartbreaking 5-4 OT loss to Illinois

and a 1-1 2OT draw against Virginia Tech brought the team to a 1-1-1 record at the end of the

month of August.

The highlight game of the early season was a road game against #10 Wake Forest but was

cancelled due to inclement weather. Weather first delayed the game by two hours during half

time, because there was less than 70 minutes played the game stats did not count. The Demon

Deacons were ahead of the Cardinals at the time the game was called in the 53rd minute.

After the cancelled game against Wake Forest the women’s soccer team traveled to Lexington

to face in-state rival University of Kentucky. Despite senior forward Corral’s three shots on

goals within the first 20 minutes, the Lady Cardinals were not able to get any shots pass UK’s

goalkeeper Kayla King. Kentucky finally broke the deadlock in the 51st minute with a goal, but

goalkeeper Paige Brown would make three saves. Louisville’s attack couldn’t cash any shots

in and in the 84th minute Kentucky took advantage of a penalty kick and closed the window of

opportunity for the Cards.
