Rembrandt’s ‘Woman’ returns to Speed museum

Known for its beauty and its mystery, Rembrandt's "Portrait of a Woman" is one of the Speed Art Museum's pride and joys. Painted in 1630, the identity of this portrait's subject has remained a mystery-until recently. "Portrait of a Woman" was originally paired with "Portrait of a Bearded Man in a Wide-Brimmed Hat," which was painted by Rembrandt three years later.

Book stores prove more accessible

The National Association of College Stores reports that an average student will spend more on books in one semester than most third-world families earn in a year: $900. Text books are expensive and they continue to cost more and more each year. According to a new study by the state Public Interest Research Group, college textbook prices "have increased at nearly four times the rate of inflation" for all finished goods since 1994.

Student Government Association officials were upset by University of Louisville administrators' recent decision not to excuse students participating the "Skip Class 2/7/07" day, and rightfully so. SGA has been working to organize students to participate in a rally for higher education in the state Capitol that day, and representatives from the association are now worried that few students will show up since their absences from class will not be excused on a university-wide basis.

Code Red and Q Official, rocked the Red Barn at the University of Louisville with their hip-hop music on Saturday night, despite an undersized crowd. The Student Activities Board had spent three months planning and preparing the concert, but only about 50 people showed in the Red Barn during the event.

The University of Louisville softball team is coming off their best season in school history and the 2007 Big East coaches' poll suggests the team will repeat as the conference leader. After posting a 45-11 record, winning the Big East regular season championship and receiving its third consecutive at-large bid to the NCAA tournament last season, the Cards were picked in the pre-season polls to win the conference.

If you go to the left, in a secluded corner, almost a world by itself, you will find an exhibit put together from Murray State University graduate and local artist Stephen Irwin (and no, not the crocodile hunter).
