New Music Festival kicks off Thursday

Composer Karl Husa, a Pulitzer Prize winner and recipient of the 1983 Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition, will be the guest composer at the New Music Festival on Nov. 3-5 at the School of Music. The festival features pieces by contemporary composers - most still living - performed by university groups.

Editorial: Homeless should not use U of L computers

Despite the University of Louisville being a public university, by paying tuition, U of L students receive a number of special privileges not afforded the rest of the public. The right to use on-campus computers is one of these. In the same way that non-students are forbidden from using our weight room, sitting in on classes, buying discounted software from the IT store and buying discounted season tickets, they must also be forbidden from using our computers.

I got a chance to catch up on my NCAA College Football 2008 on my Xbox. As always, I played as the University of Louisville and took on Ohio State University. The Buckeyes hold a similar place in my heart along with Big East referees, ESPN constantly showing Rutgers fans rush the field, Linda Cohn and kicking puppies.

Freshman tennis player Austen Childs has been nothing but good news since he stepped on the U of L campus.

Homeless cause concern at Ekstrom

As University of Louisville remains a public institution, the homeless have become a consistent presence in Ekstrom Library, and sometimes a source of disruption. According to Ekstrom Library dean Diane Nichols, a disturbance was reported involving an inebriated man on the third floor of the library on Thurs.

U of L fights drunk driving

Last year in Louisville, 14 out of the 25 traffic deaths of 18-24 year olds were directly related to alcohol, according to Allison Maze of the Jefferson County Coroner's Office. In an attempt to combat these numbers, the University of Louisville Campus Health Services and the Peer Health Advocates are working together in designing a Designated Driver Initiative (DDI) in hopes of increasing the intolerance of high-risk drinking behaviors such as drunk driving.

Ali Institute’s signs off mark

Last week, the Muhammad Ali Institute at University of Louisville celebrated Peace and Justice Week by placing yard signs on campus highlighting a number of social injustices, as they see them. Unfortunately, a couple of the signs were absolutely preposterous.
