Most students are aware of the problem of drug and alcohol abuse on college campuses. The prevalence of substance abuse, however, leads to many misconceptions amongst college students. The newly formed Coalition to Reduce High Risk Drinking and Drug Use is seeking to clear up these misunderstandings and raise awareness amongst students of the facts on college substance abuse.

Smokers may soon be putting more money into the pockets of Kentucky university students. The Kentucky House of Representatives recently passed a bill which would increase the state cigarette tax by 25 cents and restore $253.4 million to state university funding, eliminating the 12 percent cut to higher education funding Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear called for in his January budget proposal.

Students nowadays have available to them vast resources to accommodate their every whim; however, the vast majority of students abuse these resources. Students are told to check their GroupWise accounts, check their schedules, and go to Ulink. Technology has made it easy to skip class: send an e-mail to your professor "claiming" that you're sick, when in fact you just didn't feel like going, due in large part to your negligent attitude pertaining to commitments, but for the most part because lecture notes were posted on Blackboard.

Excessive use of electronic components wasteful to budget

In a recent message to the student body, University of Louisville President Dr. James R. Ramsey expounded on the effect Gov. Steve Beshear's budget cuts will have on the university. Obviously, the administration must prioritize and streamline. The advances the university has made in becoming a research-based institution cannot be reversed.

In an election reminiscent of hanging chads and defunct voting machines from the 2000 U.S. presidential election, the Student Government Association race was decided before students left the campus for spring break, but not with everyone's vote. The preliminary results left only President-elect Rudy Spencer with a confirmed position, and the three remaining races to have run off votes as no one candidate obtained more than 40 percent of the vote.
