The finances are in a healthy state at the University of Louisville, according to the Board of Trustees.
"The university has come through the first quarter well, despite the downturn in the general economy," said Mike Curtin, U of L vice president for finance. Curtin gave a financial update at the Board of Trustees meeting held Wed., Jan. 14.
"The university financial position remains strong as of September 30. The total assets for the university are $1.2 billion. That's with a ‘b,' that's the first time we've ever hit the billion dollar mark," said Curtin.

On the whole, Americans are sheltered from the outside world. The events in Gaza, the terrorist attacks in Mumbai and the genocides in Darfur seem a million miles away. Other than the terrorist attacks on Sept.11, the outside world does not breach our walls very often.
As we move closer and closer to a more global community, I feel we as Americans should become more in synch with international relations.

Local libraries remind patrons of U of L services

At a press conference earlier this month, Mayor Jerry Abramson announced University of Louisville libraries are open to the general public. "We were approached by the U of L libraries with the suggestion that we should do a joint press conference reminding the public that the libraries were available," said Kerri Richardson, Communications Coordinator for the Mayor's Office.  To many Kentuckiana residents, including the U of L community, this was firsthand knowledge and it is not a newly adopted policy.

Column: Whose Pursuit of Happiness?

As I read the University of Louisville e-mail of daily reminders of events occurring, I noticed on Jan. 13, students could get in for free to the esteemed exhibit: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness at the Speed Museum.
The exhibit included paintings, furniture, utensils, and more items from the years of Plymouth Rock to the Gilded Age. As I walked through the rooms of historical artifacts and heard my boots echo, I felt primarily as if I was on an educational adventure by myself. There was something missing in this great exhibit from Yale University.
I witnessed action paintings of The Battle of Bunker's Hill during the American Revolution.

I am going on a hunger strike.  I'm fed up with being dumped on by the administrative storm clouds and trusting our S.G.A. brand umbrellas to defend us.  It's time somebody rose above all that and stood up for the students.
In the fall semester of 2009, the University of Louisville will be instituting a mandatory meal plan for all of the students.  That means not only for residents living in traditional housing but even those that commute to school.
