Students of the University of Louisville are not the only fans in the community to show their support and admiration for the men and women Cardinal basketball teams.
Local dining and drinking spots are welcoming fans, and showing wear their loyalties lay.
My favorite time of the year is finally here, and I must say it feels really good to be a Cardinal fan right now. The Cards are on a hot streak as they recently were honored as Big East regular season and tournament Champions, the No. 1 overall seed and a No. 1 ranking in the last regular season polls.
No. 1 and Well Deserved
The University of Louisville (28-5, 18-2) men's basketball team was seeded as the No. 1 overall seed in this year's NCAA Tournament after winning both the regular season and conference tournaments in the Big East. The Cards defeated Syracuse 76-66 in the finals of the conference tournament held at Madison Square Garden.
The University of Louisville Cardinals have scured the overall number one seed, and have been placed in the Midwestern Regional. They will play their first-round game in Dayton, OH.
The results are unofficial at this time, due to up-coming runoffs between candidates for SGA President, SGA Services Vice President and Speed school senators.
The Student Government Association election had a record turn out this year, with a total of 3,050 votes. There were 64 total candidates running for various positions and close calls provoked two runoffs for SGA Services Vice President and Speed school senators.
University of Louisville students around campus had different reasons for voting, but all agreed students must vote to get their voices heard on various issues.
During these tough economic times, it seems easy to focus on what we don't have; a local campus group however, has decided instead to focus on what it could give.
Earlier this year, the University of Louisville's chapter of the Golden Key Society turned a community service project into a generous donation for those less fortunate.
"One of the missions of Golden Key is to involve members into two big literacy projects a year," said James Lee, a U of L grad student and co-president of Golden Key. "For the past several years, Golden Key has paired up with [Family Scholar House] to run a book drive."
For college students and their families, this is a time of financial turmoil. For some, the unfortunate choice of whether to attend college or not must be faced. We have all seen how even those with money to spare worry, what does that say for the rest of us?
Down 1-0 against Bradley University, senior centerfielder Kristi Cunningham steps up to the plate to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning for the University of Louisville softball team. She draws a walk to propel the stagnant Cardinal offense into motion, and later comes around to tie the game. Louisville would go on to win the game, 2-1.
As one of only two of the team's four-year players, team captain Kristi Cunningham feels it is essential to lead by example.
It was a nice surprise to see that several hundred more students voted during the SGA elections this year than in years past. Even though it proved to me beyond a shadow of a doubt, this election is nothing more than a popularity contest.
