Column: Taking the church out of marriage

Last week, Vermont passed a law that allows for gay marriage after overriding a veto from their state governor.  While I personally don't give a darn who anyone dates, it matters to me that anyone with a willing partner ought to be allowed to enter into a civil union.

Though many University of Louisville fans probably watched last Monday's national championship game dreaming about what could have been; the excitement these Cards provided throughout the 2008-09 season should not be overlooked.
Now that we're a few weeks removed from initial feelings of disappointment after U of L fell to MSU in the Elite Eight, let's take a step back and review some of the highs and lows of the season.

Letter From the Editor: Let me Set Things straight

2009-04-13T00:00:00-04:00April 13th, 2009|Uncategorized|

Over the past week, I have received numerous e-mails, text messages, voice mails and even a poke on my Facebook.  To what do I owe all this extra attention?  People were upset about an advertisement placed in The Louisville Cardinal by someone attempting to disprove the atrocities of Auschwitz and other concentration camps.

United States Chief Justice to visit campus on April 18

The United State's 17th chief justice will be speaking at the University of Louisville on April 18.
Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. will speak at 10 a.m. as part of the McConnell Center's lecture series. Although the tickets have already been allocated for his talk, the event will be broadcasted live at www.mcconnellcenter.org.
Appointed as Chief Justice in 2005, Roberts is a Harvard University and Harvard Law School graduate. He has served as a judge on the U.S. Court of appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit for two years.

Earth Day activities created to bring life to campus

Every day can be Earth Day, at least for the University of Louisville.
Although Earth Day is actually April 22, U of L will be hosting festivities today, April 14.
Dining Services will be participating in several activities throughout campus.
At McAlister's Deli, "Project Patio" will be working to beautify the restaurant's south entrance. Dining Services will be partnering with students to plant flowers and pot trees. With 15 minutes of assistance, students will receive a free McAlister's meal.
"We are confident that after this transformation, students will take pride in keeping our university beautiful," a U of L Dining flyer states.
In the Student Activities Center, there will also be many activities.
"Tremendous the Cash Tree" will be wondering around the SAC trying to find people who are recycling. This employee dressed in a tree costume will hand out $5 in Dining Dollars when they witness someone recycling.
The activity "Art not Trash" will include a Hite Art student, also a Sodexo employee, helping students transform recycled paper into art. This student will also be showing demonstrations on how to use plastic to-go containers to produce Shrink-A-Dinks. Both activities will give students hands on opportunities.
Also in the SAC, Heine Brothers will be making frozen coffee beverages with beans that are roasted in Kentucky's back yard. This event is named "Quench Your Thirst Locally."
"Organic Mania" will give out organic fruit donated by Piazza Produce.
Finally, U of L Dining will be giving away t-shirts that say, "Don't Trash our Future."
Celebrate Earth Day early by reducing your carbon footprint, helping beautify campus and learning about how to stay green.

The event which is from 5-8 p.m. is Derby themed. All students, alumni and community members are welcome to join in the festivities.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon will be selling Infield tickets for the 135th Kentucky Derby and Oaks. The tickets will be on sale in the Student Activities Center through April 23. Visit the SAC Monday through Friday during lunch for more details.

Hebert will become spokesman

The University of Louisville will soon have a high profile spokesman.  On May 4, Mark Hebert, WHAS11's political reporter will become U of L's Director of Communications, Marketing and Media Relations.
Hebert said: "If you take the construction projects, coupled with the research, coupled with the brain power that's coming out of that university, I think you could make the argument that the University of Louisville is the economic engine for the city of Louisville right now.  I think that's a good story that needs to be told. "

One reader’s take on ‘Government should step up’ column

2009-04-12T00:00:00-04:00April 12th, 2009|Uncategorized|

After returning from a well deserved and much needed spring break vacation with my family, a friend introduced me to the "Government should step up to promote education" article by Abby Rathbun.  During lunch after Sunday mass, it made for wonderful conversation.
