“This social pow-wow and this social gathering here today is to bring people together.”

This was the central point of the first Louisville social pow-wow that occurred on Sunday in the Speed Art Museum with music by the Thunderbutte, curated by U of L’s Cultural Center, Commission on Diversity & Racial Equity, and many other sponsors.

Defined by the Social Distance Powwow, the meaning of the gathering is “a sacred North American Indigenous community ceremony involving feasting, singing, and dancing.” With this idea, students, as well as community members participated in dancing, watched traditional indigenous dancing, and learned about Native American culture both in Kentucky and across the nation.
