October 17, the Kentucky Science Center hosted “exBEERiment” for its second year.  There were drinks from four different breweries as well as Nachbar and Pauly’s Schnitzelberg Pub, “Liquid Nitrogen and Beer Ice Cream”, and a live DJ.  This 21 and up event is a part of the Science Center’s effort to provide more adult programs, drawing nearly 200 people last year and double that this year according to Andrew Spence, Science Center staff member.

Going to each breweries table and sampling an ale or beer or two, commenting on the differences, pros and cons and of course, coming back for more may have been the main attraction, but it certainly wasn’t all. Besides the usual installations of interactive visual aids, there were presentations on the science and making of beer, such as a microscopic look at different ingredients in beer.

The Beer Ice Cream was one of the most popular things of the night.  It was made at the table right before serving and was delicious, as well as fun to see.  The ingredients have -320o liquid nitrogen poured over them, which boils and smokes at room temperature as the mixture solidifies into ice cream.

There were other science demonstrations throughout the night as well, such as putting Mentos in Diet Coke and lighting balloons filled with different gasses on fire to see the differently colored fireballs they made.

So if a night of another beer to try or beer-fact to learn around every corner, friendly crowds and staff enjoying the night, demonstrations with fireballs, ice cream and music sounds like fun to you, you definitely don’t want to miss out on the next exBEERiment.
